Movie Review- Les Intouchables

'Les Intouchables' (2011), directed by Oliver Nakache and Eric Toledano is based on the true story of a unique partnership between Parisian aristocrat, Phillipe and a young ex-con, Driss. The friendship arises when Driss is offered the job of caring for Philippe, who due to a paragliding accident, is now a quadriplegic  constantly confined to the restraints of his wheelchair and unable to feel or move anything below his collar line.

The movie follows the lives of these two central characters, as each challenge the other to move further beyond their boundaries and shatter the other's preconceived attitudes towards life, love and friendship. The duo form a loyal bond and together they take Paris by storm. Like the name of the movie suggests, this pair really are 'untouchable'.

Starring Omar Sy and Francois Cluzet, the movie  is filled with thrill and adventure, whilst at the same time touching on the deeper notion of what is important and valuable in life. It reminds us that no matter where we come from, we always have something to learn from others, if we're willing to listen and embrace their ideas. It looks at the exteme cultural and financial differences that can exist between people living only 10 minutes away from each other, and how when these barriers are broken down, underneath exists the same human longing for and love of life.

Watching a french film such as this one with the English subtitles is a great way to improve your listening skills, but also gives you great insight into french culture.   If you do decide to watch the film, see if you can identify the phrase 'C'est parti!'- meaning 'Let's go!', as it comes up quite a few times. I'd give this film a 9/10, because  it's rare to find a film in which the humour makes me laugh aloud, but which has characters that seem so real and story that makes me think and question myself. Be warned though, it is an adult film, and recommended for mature audiences.
