Food Time: Les Repas

Food is something which unites people all around the world, and yet also shows our diversity. If you are travelling in France or a Francophone country, you will no doubt at some stage have to attempt to order some food off a menu. And if you aren't so lucky as to travel, food is a great conversation topic to bring up with your classmates and/or friends.

Here are some words to start off your vocab:

Breakfast- Le Petit Déjeuner

la croissant- croissant (crescent shaped pastry)
les céréales- cereal
les oeufs- eggs
jambon cru- bacon
l'omelette (f)- omelette
le pain grillé- toast
la crêpe- pancake (large, thin, flat pancake)

Lunch- Le Déjeuner

le pain- bread
la baguette- French bread stick
le sandwich- sandwich
le croque-monsieur- toasted ham and cheese sandwich (toastie, jaffle, grilled sandwich ect)
la soupe- soup
la salade-salad

la confiture- jam/marmalade
le beurre- butter
le jambon-ham
la fromage-cheese

Dinner- Le Dîner

le plat principal- main course

les nouilles-noodles
les pâtes-pasta
la tourte-pie
le riz-rice
le curry-curry
l'hamburger- burger/hamburger

la viande -meat
le poulet-chicken
la poisson-fish
le canard-duck
le boeuf-beef
le mouton- sheep/mutton
l'agneau-lamb
le porc-pork

les frites (f)-chips (hot chips)
la salade-salad

Desserts- Les Desserts

le yaourt- yoghurt
la tarte aux fruits- fruit tarte
le gâteau-cake

la mousse- mousse

Drinks- Les Boissons

le café- coffee

le chocolat chaud-hot chocolate

le vin blanc/rouge-white/red wine

Fruit- Les Fruits (Important for icecream/Juice flavours!)

la pomme- apple

la fraise- strawberry

l'abricot (m)- apricot
l'orange (f)- orange
l'ananas (m)-pineapple

Now, as well as knowing what you're eating, it's important to know how to talk about it. Here are some useful phrases when ordering food.

*fill the brackets with what ever you would like to order*


Je voudrais.... (deux oeufs)... s'il vous plaît 
'I would like... (two eggs)... please'

Est-ce que vous avez ...(des frîtes)....?
'Do you have any...(chips)...?'

Je prendrai... (le croque-monsieur)...
'I'll take the ham and cheese toastie.'
